Christmas Shop Til You Drop

Welcome to another hot day in Penrith. There is certainly not going to be a white christmas anywhere near here, and thats just the way I like it!

I’ve just finished our Christmas grocery shopping and I am glad that is over. Its a sad truth that while Christmas is supposed to be a celebration that brings people together, the lead up often put so much pressure on that it tears people apart. I did my shopping at Coles at Centro Nepean today, but I also had to grab a couple of things from Westfield. Both were packed with people and the tension was palpable. I have to admit I succumbed to it myself when my sister and I fell into an argument over a small misunderstanding. While tension is a personal emotion, it spills over into our reactions with other people and often when one person reacts aggressively to someone it starts a hostile chain reaction. I saw it first hand while waiting for a taxi. A lady approached the line where there were already a couple of people waiting. As she walked toward me I noticed how sad she looked. She appeared to have been crying. When a taxi finally came, she reacted angrily when the woman in front of us didn’t get up to accept it fast enough. My sister, who hadn’t seen her earlier, felt this ladys anger and looked at me as if to say “What just happened?”. Moments later my sister went to call another cab and I was left alone with the lady. A cab came in at the same time so I offered to let her go in front while I waited for my sister to return. She looked at me with surprise, and I asked if she was okay. Again she looked like she would cry as she said it wasn’t. We had a short chat and I hope that I made a difference to her day. I do know that as she hopped into the cab, she turned to me smiling and wished me a Merry Christmas.  That felt good.

Thinking about it further I realised the parallels. Both my sister and I are going through relationship, lets say, “issues”. Along with the pressure of Christmas, we have had other things on our minds and today that tension spilled over for us with a misunderstanding of something small. What caused the argument wasn’t really at fault, the tension had just built up and spilled over.

We all have the power to create a chain reaction when we are amongst other people. If we take a moment to breathe and recognise what we are really feeling, then we have the opportunity to make that chain a positive one by reacting with love, not anger. It may seem like a big ask, but it is achievable and it makes you feel better too.

Spread the love Penrith!

Big thanks for the “Stranger smiles” I received today it Centro. You helped me realise that there was more going on than my own preoccupations and transformed my chain into a happy one! Smiles are definitely one of the best Christmas presents – we can all afford them and yet their values is priceless!

I wish you a very Happy Christmas!

A Beautiful Day

A good friend of mine introduced me to India Arie’s music a while ago. While I had heard a little bit of her music, I hadn’t listened to it in depth. My friend had it on while we were in the car and I fell in love. Music is one of my greatest passions, and songs that have a great sound and inspiring lyrics are definitely my favourites. India Arie’s songs fit both categories. Last night I was listening to one of her albums and found the track above. I love, love, love it and I put it on first thing this morning as the start to my day. It made me want to dance and even inspired me to send texts to a couple of friends just to wish them a beautiful day too.

Thankfully I was  ultra cheery this morning, because the Happy Penrith vibe was definitely tested when demolition began on the house next door to mine. The house had a beautiful big yard and lush gorgeous trees, that were in fact one of the reasons that I liked my current place so much. But no more. Unfortunately, as in so many places at the moment, the gorgeous parcel of land is to be turned into another block of units. I don’t want to post too negatively, so I am focusing on the positive. The largest tree at the back of the yard, which is just at my bedroom window, has been left standing. I actually found myself this morning praying that it wouldn’t be taken. It is home to so many beautiful birds, and provides lovely shade and fresh air. I often find myself watching the bats making their topsy turvy way through the branches at night to eat the berries it produces. Tomorrow the house itself will be demolished, but at this stage the tree is still  staying so I have some hope that the animals will return in time. Progress is one thing and its sad that it, and nature, don’t co-exist more in a world so concerned with climate change. That being said points to the developer, and the bulldozer team today, for respecting it enough to keep it. Thankyou!

Please take a minute to listen to India’s song. It is an uplifting way to start the day, an affirmation in itself. It definitely made a difference to my day today and I hope it makes a difference to yours!

Quick cheerios to the bus driver on the 11.40 am 785 bus with the greatest laugh, and the staff at Theos cafe on High St where mum and I had delicious cappucinos today when I had to escape the noise!

Heres hoping you have had a beautful day and are looing forward to a great night!

Bushfires at Bringelly

Throughout today I noticed the cloud of smoke that hovered around the area, obviously from bushfires close  by. Just after writing my previous post I logged onto the Western Weekenders website, http://www.westernweekender.com.au/ and have seen that the fires are quite extreme and are threatening houses. It is thought that one home may have already been destroyed.

I want to send out my blessings and prayers to those that are affected. My family went through bushfires several years ago when we lived in the mountains area and it was one of the most frightening experiences i have been through. My thoughts also go out to the fire fighters who do such a courageous and difficult job. As I mentioned, i did see two crews on High St today. That experience made me more aware of the personal face of those guys, rather than just the service they work for.

To all the families whose homes are affected, the firefighters who put themselves on the line to protect us and the families of those firefighters who show just as much courage, I send out my prayers and best wishes. I hope that it is under control quickly.

Santas Bus Driver

Wow! Today was a hot one. As I sit here typing this, it still is. Today was a Christmas shopping day for me and I am just a little bit glad that it is over. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas. I just don’t like the shops at Christmas. I love walking down High St. I always have but today, with the heat, Westfield and their air conditioning were definitely calling.

So, who made my day in Penrith today?  The first smile of the day was definitely brought to my face by the bus, and bus driver, who took me into the centre today. The bus was Westbus number 9585. Talk about getting into the spirit! The bus is completely decked out with colourful tinsel, even the driver had his hat festooned with the colourful foil decorations. Combined with the christmas carols on the sound systemfor the journey, boarding this bus was like stepping onto Santas sleigh! Add to that a cheery bus driver and you have a great way to start the day in the Christmas spirit.

My bus driver on the way home was another of the regular drivers in the area.Again always cheery and friendly. Unfortunately I don’t have the bus number or his name, but I will certainly have it for next time. Points to ComfortDelgro Cabcharge also for changing their bus out of service messages to “Merry Christmas from CDC”.

Other Happy Penrith businesses today included

-Gloria Jeans inside the upstairs food court at Westfield (for those old school like me, the Plaza). Even though it seemed impossible to find iced coffees down that end today, the iced chocolate was absolutely delicious and definitely served with a smile. Thanks guys!

- The lovely lady with the long red nails who served me at Big W and the lady with the gorgeous turquoise nails at Temt.

- The always fun team at The Smith Family.

And a big hiya to the team of friendly firemen responding to a call on High St today.

All in all another Happy Penrith day for me. Hope you had a great one too!

Inspiration

Anyone who knows me knows that I am an avid local paper reader. I enjoy keeping up with what has happened in my area and what is being planned.

A couple of weeks ago the Penrith Press ran a story featuring the Penrith Chamber of Commerce chief exec, Jill Woods, on the declining standards of customer service today. (http://penrith-press.whereilive.com.au/news/story/customer-service-standards-dropping/) The day I read the story I had been out and about in Penrith, and in my experience that day, I had received a lot of wonderful service and talked to a lot of lovely people. While I noted the difference in my experience, I also acknowledged that in some businesses the level of service was pretty terrible.

A few days later I was reading another of our local papers, The Western Weekender. In his weekly letter, the Weekenders editor, Troy Dodds, referenced the article and again commented on the state of customer service and the decline of respect and niceness shown today. I read it and went to write a reply to thank the people that I had great experiences with for making my day that little bit brighter.

In the process of writing the email reply I realised that I had a lot of people who had affected me, probably unwittingly, and that the email was simply too long. I had the idea of a local happiness project sometime ago, though it had been shelved in the midst of other things. As I recognised the people who had made me happy, I realised that this was the perfect forum for sharing my positive experiences and, hopefully, encourage others to do the same.

My hope with The Penrith Haappiness Project is that by focusing on the great experiences, people and service in the area that positivity will spread. It might be idealisitic, it might not work, but at least I’ll have tried. If this project makes one person smile as they read, or even realise what a difference the smile they gave away today meant to a stranger, then it has worked.

If you have had a great experience in Penrith, please contact me with your story. I’d love to hear it and share it with others. Just as importantly, I’m sure the person involved would love to hear it too.
